Willy Verginer

Born in 1957 in Bressanone, he lives and works in Ortisei.
A master wood carver, after an initial abstract period, in 2005 Verginer returned to a reinterpretation of figurative sculpture. His wooden sculptures – mostly of women and young men – are very true to life but are made “unreal” by painting over large areas. Bright colours such as cyan, magenta and gold and decorative elements such as petals, flowers and birds are grafted onto his sculptures to give them a highly original appearance, inevitably drawing the spectator into a magical, suspended dimension.
His work has been featured in numerous Archive in Milan, Italy and abroad, in Austria and the Netherlands.
His workshop has become a training ground for artists of later generations, such as Aron Demetz.
