Inspired by the exchange of people, animals, plants, minerals, stories, legends, languages and traditions in the Alpine region of Ladinia, the Biennale Gherdëina is a contemporary art festival organised in the Val Gardena, in the heart of the Dolomites.
It was established in Doris Ghetta in 2008 and began life as a cultural event in the public space of Ortisei. Since then, it has grown edition by edition, involving neighbouring villages and soon becoming a visionary international project, but with firm roots in the Alto Adige region. Set in the landscape in an ongoing dialogue with the human and non-human beings that live in or cross the valley, the works are site-specific, produced in the Val Gardena, courtesy of a lively community of artisans with age-old experience in the art of wood carving.
Since 2019 the biennial has been organised by the Zënza Sëida APS, a cultural association that promotes culture as a precious tool for social wellbeing.
